Studio portrait of 3827 Private (Pte) Raymond Keogh, 8th Battalion from St Kilda, Victoria. A 26 year old groom prior to enlisting on 30 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 23 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40). Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in March 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 23 September 1916. He was Mentioned in Despatches (MID) “for participation in a very successful raid on the enemy trenches on 30 September 1916.” After being taken ill and evacuated to England for medical treatment in November, he was promoted to Corporal on 24 January 1917 and returned to France to rejoin the 8th Battalion in June of that year. Following promotion to Temporary Sergeant, he was killed in action on 28 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
