Studio portrait of 79 Private (Pte) Edwin Jordan, 3rd Divisional Cyclist Company from Marrickville, NSW. A 25 year old fitter’s assistant prior to enlisting on 3 April 1916, he embarked for overseas on 18 May 1916 from Sydney aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64). Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in September and was promoted to Lance Corporal. On transferring to the 4th Battalion in December 1916, he reverted to Private but was later promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in March 1917. Cpl Jordan was killed in action at Lagnicourt, France on 15 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His younger brother, 2920 Pte Leonard Jordan was killed in action in Belgium on 20 September 1917. [See image H06459.]
