Description

English Channel, England. 25 April 1917. The British Troopship Ballarat, carrying Australian troops to England, sinking by the stern after being torpedoed in the English Channel. Efforts made to tow the ship to shallow water failed and she sank off The Lizard the following morning. No lives were lost of the 1752 souls on board. Her escort, HMS Phoenix, can be seen in the background. (Donor Mrs G. McElhinney)
