Informal outdoor portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) John Ainsworth Horrocks of the 27th Battalion, AIF, photographed in camp, probably at Sutton Veny, UK. A 28 year old orchardist from Larg’s Bay, South Australia, 52741 Private Horrocks had enlisted on 20 March 1916. He attended the officers’ school at Duntroon and was appointed a 2nd Lt on 16 February 1918. 2nd Lt Horrocks embarked with the Special Draft of AIF Officers from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 28 February 1918 and disembarked in Liverpool, UK on 20 April 1918. Following further training in the UK, he proceeded to France where he joined the 27th Battalion in July. After being wounded in action on 9 August he was evacuated to hospital and died from his wounds on 11 August 1918. 2nd Lt Horrocks is buried in the Vignacourt British Cemetery, Vignacourt, France.
