Description
Bakli Bay, Hainan Island. c. 28 August 1945. The train used to evacuate ex-prisoners of war (POWs), including members of the 2/21st Australian Infantry Battalion Group, who were liberated by a detachment of US Office of Strategic Services, after the surrender of Japan is stopped on the tracks. They were evacuated by train to Sama Bay, after their first attempt was frustrated by Chinese Communists who derailed the engine with a bomb. The man walking beside the train (left) and carrying a Red Cross flag, is probably Lieutenant Walker of the US Office of Strategic Services
