Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Leslie Hugh Bignell, 19th Battalion. An accountant, of Sydney, New South Wales, he enlisted on 18 July 1915 and sailed from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic on 20 January 1916 for Egypt and then on to France and the Western Front. He was wounded in action at Pozieres on 29 July 1916 and was subsequently evacuated to England for treatment of shrapnel wounds to the leg and recuperation from deafness. Lt Bignell rejoined his unit in France on 15 June 1917 and was killed in action on 7 April 1918 near Villers Bretonneux, France. He was aged 27 years.
