Description
North Korea. October 1950. An unidentified Vickers machine gunner, from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), performs maintenance work on his gun, while covering the advance north after the taking of Pakchon. His position is on a hill of small pine trees, above a valley and river. The ammunition belts are empty and there are many spent cartridges on the ground. The machine gun is water cooled, with a pipe leading from a can of water to the gun. Note the soldier is wearing a balaclava under his slouch hat, and has one hand in the pocket of his coat, to try and ward off the biting cold of the Korean winter.
