Description
On 31 May 1942, Australia made its first acquaintance with Japanese submarines. Three of them sneaked into Sydney Harbour and their combined efforts resulted in the sinking of a small harbour vessel of no military value. Within an hour or so of their entrance, one had been sunk by gunfire and the other two by depth charges. Ernest Hirsch inspects the damage caused to his Eastern Suburbs of Sydney home by a Japanese shell.
