Joseph Benedict Chifley as the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia announces the end of the Second World War in the Pacific with the surrender of Japan, August 1945
Description
Chifley states that the Japanese government has accepted the terms of surrender set by the allied nations. He asks that the fallen be remembered and thanks those who contributed to winning the war, including the allied commanders, and the fighting men of the United Nations. He laments the death of John Curtin, emphasises the importance of working for a prosperous peace and invites Australian people to participate in thanksgiving ceremonies. Chifley's speech is preceded by Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 4, 2nd theme and Chifley is introduced by an unknown speaker.
