Description
A group portrait of the crew of HMS Challenger II, probably at a wharf at Kure harbour, Japan. The ship was visiting during a world voyage of scientific discovery. During the voyage, the deepest known point of the oceans was discovered off the Marianas Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was named Challenger Deep, after the ship. HMS Challenger II had a predecessor of the same name famous for its circumnavigating voyage of oceanographic discovery between 1872 and 1876. Note the three men in civilian suits (probably some Challenger's scientists) in the third row and the merchant vessel Saban Maru berthed at rear.
