Description

Informal portrait of Private (Pte) William Speakman, the winner of the second Victoria Cross (VC) to be awarded for gallantry in the Korean War. Pte Speakman is a member of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders attached to B Company, The Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Pte Speakman is wearing his VC device (ribbon and miniature cross) above the left breast pocket of his uniform. The presentation was made during a special parade in the battalion lines in Korea. Pte Speakman won the VC for his actions in a battle in the Kowang San area on 4 November 1951.
