Lady Edwina Mountbatten shakes hands with a US Army officer who is wearing a Southeast Asia Command shoulder patch. They are in the corridor of a hospital in Japan, near a visitor information and security counter. Lady Mountbatten is visiting hospitals and other medical facilities in Southeast Asia in her capacity as Superintendent in Chief St John Ambulance Brigade, and Chairman of St John and Red Cross Services Hospitals Welfare Department. . On her uniform, Lady Mountbatten is wearing a St John shoulder title and a circular patch on the lower part of her sleeve, which reads 'ORDER OF ST JOHN BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY SERVICE HOSPITAL WELFARE'.
