Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Matthew B Ridgway, Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command ...
Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Matthew B Ridgway, Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command in Korea (carrying a white glove in a gloved left hand) stands with Major General Blackshear M. Bryan of the US 24th Division (front) on the tarmac at Haneda Air Field, Tokyo. Behind them in a VIP area (marked on the tarmac), is a large group of officers from forces in Japan and Korea. Included amongst them (fourth from left on painted line), is the Australian Lt Gen H R H Robertson, Administrative Commander of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Korea. The occasion is the farewell to General Douglas MacArthur who is returning home to the United States of America, after being replaced by Lt Gen Ridgway. Note the men standing on an elevated platform behind the officers. Two are using movie cameras to film the event.
