Description
Members of the 170th Independent Mortar Battery Royal Artillery, rest by their 4.2 inch mortar which has been set up on a road beside a field. 4.2 inch mortars can fire high explosive ammunition, as well as white phosphorus projectiles to create smoke screens, and luminescent rounds. This mortar is fitted to a mobile baseplate for towing behind a vehicle. Earth has been rammed up against the base of the mortar to help minimise its forward movement during firing. Some of the soldiers are leaning up against a stack of metal mortar bomb boxes. Most of the men are wearing summer bush hats. The battery are in support of the 29th British Infantry Brigade.
