Description
Enjoying a meal on a hill top in Korea (c October 1951) are, 1400170 Lieutenant (Lt) R J 'Russ' McWilliam of Eagle Junction, Qld (left); Private (Pte) R J Steward of Maida Vale, WA; Pte M B Lee of Camp Hill, Qld; and Pte L D O'Keefe of Liverpool, NSW, slicing a loaf of bread. The men are just finishing off a hot meal which the cooks of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), have just turned out. C Ration cartons form a temporary roof for the hillside shelter. It will later be roofed over with logs and sandbags. Lt McWilliam was mentioned in despatches (MID) for his outstanding military leadership on 7 and 8 October 1951, at the battle of Maryang San and was killed in action on 7 November 1951,whilst commanding C Company in the same area.
