Pozieres, France. A destroyed British Mark I tank belonging to C Company, Heavy Machine Gun Corps ...
Description
Pozieres, France. A destroyed British Mark I tank belonging to C Company, Heavy Machine Gun Corps (later the Tank Corps) on the battlefield at Pozieres. It was one of seven vehicles assigned to the Canadian Second and Third Divisions for their attack on Courcelette and German positions to the south and east of the village on 15 September 1916. Of the seven tanks assigned to the attack on Courcelette, one broke down before the attack, three became bogged in German trenches. Only three reached Courcelette, and only one was in action after this attack. This was the first time that tanks were used on the Western Front. (Donor D. Stevenson)
