Description
San Sebastiano, Italy. 27 March 1944. The red hot lava, seen clearly on the left, rolls down towards the village. In the worst eruption of Vesuvius since 1872 a mighty wall of lava ten to twelve feet deep and up to a quarter of a mile wide has completely enveloped the village and is threatening other mountainside localities. Many RAF men worked all night rescuing more than 5000 inhabitants of San Sebastiano and Massa Di Somma.
