Description

RAAF Iroquois helicopters from No 9 Squadron re-supply troops of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) in the field during a recent search and destroy operation in South Vietnam's Phuoc Tuy Province. The helicopter is approaching the landing zone (LZ) which is marked by coloured smoke from a smoke canister. The operation, by troops of the 2nd and 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiments (2RAR and 7RAR), was aimed at destroying a Viet Cong logistics area on the coast about 20 miles from the Task Force Headquarters at Nui Dat. The RAAF helicopters flew long hours in support of the operation, re-supplying to forward areas and also provided around-the-clock "dust-off", service for any wounded. The squadron is based at Vung Tau, 35 miles south-east of Saigon.
