Description
Aitape, New Guinea. Identified, leading the patrol down the steps, is VX141179 Private (Pte) Peter Robert Napper, 2/7 Battalion. Pte Napper was died on injuries on 2 April 1945, aged 21 years. Almost too sheer to climb, a mountain in the Aitape area had been surmounted by 846 steps known as the 'Golden Stairway'. These steps enabled the troops to scale the mountain to attack the Japanese forces on the other side. This patrol was only 250 yards from a Japanese-held position.
