Aitape, New Guinea. With water tins strapped to their backs these two Australians pause for a smoke before attempting the long climb up the 'Golden Stairway', the name given to 846 steps surmounting a ridge in the forward areas. Their men are occupying the summit of the hill and must have daily supplies of water.
