Description

Cassino, Italy. 29 February 1944. The ancient Benedictine monastery of Montecassino, dominating the country surrounding the town of Cassino on the 5th Army front in Italy, was used by the Germans as a stronghold to stem the Allied advance. Many Allied casualties were caused by the German gunners in the monastery firing down on our men as they advanced across the exposed country beneath. Many warnings were given to the Germans to cease using the monastery for this purpose. The warnings were ignored. An aerial view shows that the old monastery was left in ruins after Allied bomber aircraft and guns had been forced to silence the Nazis inside.
