Studio portrait of Corporal William Whitley Gocher, 13th Battalion, of Newtown, NSW. In December 1915 he was promoted to Corporal and in March 1916 he transferred to the 45th Battalion. He was promoted to Sergeant on 10 August 1916. Sgt Gocher was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for his bravery and coolness during an attack on 27 October 1916 on German trenches near Diependaal, Belgium. In February 1917 he demonstrated "dash. determination and coolness under fire" leading a team during a bombing raid at Geudecourt and was awarded a Bar to his MM. he was promoted to Lieutenant on 24 April 1917. Lt Gocher was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on 7 June 1917.
