Tulloh, Norman McCall (Driver)
Two original personal diaries of VX100286 Driver Norman McCall Tulloh (124th Reserve Motor Transport Company AMF, subsequently 140th Australian General Transport Company AIF), and a bound typed transcription titled 'Darwin 1942: An Army Truck Driver's Diary from World War II' based on them. They cover the period December 1941-March 1943. They describe Tulloh's service driving Army trucks (including a 1940 Chevrolet) between Alice Springs and Darwin, and especially in the Darwin area (e.g. Darwin wharves, Vestey's Meatworks, Winnellie, Noonamah, Adelaide River) and related experiences (vehicle maintenance, camp life, recuperation in hospital from illness, recreation). They comment in detail on the Japanese air raids on Darwin throughout 1942. The transcript expands on the diary with extracts from Tulloh's letters to his parents, later comments from Army friends and family, and supporting information from other sources. It includes background information, copies of photographs and captions, maps and an index. The diary has been heavily censored, with many names, locations and other references excised.
