Studio portrait of 4032 Corporal (Cpl) Oswald Bruce, 4th Field Company Engineers. A mining surveyor from Adamstown, New South Wales, prior to enlistment in the 17th Battalion on 16 March 1915, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles on 12 May 1915 for Egypt. On 11 August he was transferred to the 4th Field Company Engineers and embarked for Gallipoli on 3 September 1915. Later that month he was wounded in action and evacuated to Malta for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his unit in Egypt on 18 March 1916. The unit relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Private Bruce was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 8 August 1916 and to Corporal on 8 December 1916. Cpl Bruce was killed in action near Albert, France, on 18 December 1916. He was aged 23 years.
