Maribyrnong, Vic. c 1943. A Japanese 75mm Type 88 (1928) anti-aircraft gun, serial number 1018, manufactured by the Japanese State Arsenal. This is a dual purpose gun effective as an anti-aircraft or anti-tank gun. This gun was operated by the Japanese 47th Field Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion against Australian and United States forces during the allied attack on Buna in January 1943. The gun was found on a track west of Giropa Point and Giropa Creek, south of Buna in the area of the Government Gardens. The 32nd Division, United States Army, Urbana Force, were responsible for the attack on the Japanese in this area. The gun was recoverd and brought back to Australia for intelligence and technical examination which was carried out at the Maribyrnong Ordance Factory. In this photograph the gun is in the travelling position, with the legs and the trails folded, and the barrel run back to full recoil. The towing point is to the right. (Copied for AWM54 320/4/29)
