Description
A derelict Japanese fighter, a Nakajima Ki-43 'Oscar', lies abandoned at Danip Airfield in the jungle. It probably flew with the 63rd Sentai (Squadron) of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF). A left over relic from the Second Word War, it is representative of many hulks which are occasionally discovered long after hostilities were concluded in 1945. This image was taken just prior to preparations undertaken to recover the aircraft and return it to Australia for comprehensive restoration. It is now in the aircraft collection of the Australian War Memorial.
