Description
Informal portrait of 2884 Air Mechanic Class 1 (AM1) Sydney Harold Banks-Smith of Pambula NSW and the Australian Flying Corps. A mechanical engineer prior to enlistment on 31 March 1915, he initially served in Gallipoli and the Middle East as a Driver (Dvr) with the 5th and 15th Field Ambulance before proceeding to France in April 1917 to serve with 5th Div Headquarters. Dvr Banks-Smith was selected for Air Mechanic training and was posted to England for training in August 1917. He completed his training as AM1 on 1 June 1918 and was posted to No. 8 Training Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. Pte Banks-Smith was killed in an aeroplane accident on 3 July 1918, aged 25 years.
