Filkins, Colin Joseph (Driver, b.1917 - d.2002)
Papers of NX27250 Driver Colin Joseph Filkins (2/10th Field Ambulance) relating to his captivity as a prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. They include: (i) POW lettercards to his family, two letters from his family on which he wrote messages to a fellow POW (NX18483 H.J. Chatfield) and letters to his wife and family after liberation (ii) official and Red Cross telegrams and correspondence concerning his situation (iii) ships' serials and newsletters of HMS 'Formidable' (on which he returned to Australia from Manila), USS 'Cape Gloucester' and USS 'Bingham' (iv) service and personal papers. Also includes a 1997-98 typescript account titled 'What Now? What Next?' describing his experiences in Changi, his journey to Burma with 'A Force' on the 'Toyohasi Maru', and working on the aerodrome at Victoria Point, at 75 Kilo Camp on the Thailand-Burma Railway, port works in Saigon, Vietnam and at 'Camp 17' in the coal mining town of Omutta, Japan.
