Studio portrait of Captain Frederick Leslie Moore, 5th Battalion from Brighton Victoria. A 19 year old clerk in the Commonwealth Public Service prior to enlistment on 24 August 1914, he had previously served in the 51st Infantry AMF. He embarked for overseas as a Second Lieutenant from Melbourne on 21 October 1914 aboard HMAT Orvieto. On the day of landing at Gallipoli (25 April 1915), he was wounded in action and evacuated to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. In October 1915, he rejoined the 5th Battalion which was still at Gallipoli, but in December they withdrew to Egypt and in March 1916 re-deployed to France. After being mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's Despatches of 9 April 1917, he was wounded in action on 8 May 1917 but remained on duty. He died on 20 September 1917 of wounds received at Polygon Wood, Belgium and is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. The portrait was signed in France on 6 August 1917.
