Description

Australian runner Marjorie Jackson and representatives from other nations visited a well organised track and field atheletics meeting in Tokyo shortly after they had competed at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Jackson, wearing a tracksuit, is second from the left in the official party and had won gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metres in Helsinki. The tall man, second from the right and wearing a towel around his neck, is thought to be Arthur Wint a member of Jamaica's gold medal winning 4x400 metres relay team. Wint had also won gold in the 400 meters and silver in the 800 metres at the 1948 Olympic games in London, England. The other athletes and officials are unidentified. A sign in the right background reads, "Welcome Olympic Champions" (in English) and ........(in Japanese). A tripod mounted anemometer (right) measures trackside wind speed. A crowd of locals and British Commonwealth Forces Korea (BCFK) servicemen line the terraces around the track. Two large towers at rear provide lighting for night-time events.
