Picton states that after joining the Kogarah Banch, her duties included administration for the nearby 45th Battalion, "home nursing and first aid", which enabled her to be attached to her local Civilian Aid Service (CAS) Centre, First Aid Centre, Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Centre and the National Emergency Service (NES) Centre. In addition, Picton "worked at the British Centre helping provide companionship, entertainment and meals and accompanied servicemen on day outings. We adopted Ward 17 at the 113th Australian General Hospital (AGH), Concord, entertaining the patients, also supplying and serving refreshments and on special occasions arranging parties and outings. Carried out any messages and purchasing any items required." June's mother, Miriam Picton, also joined the same WANS branch, and additionally "worked at The Hut (CENEF) at St Andrews Cathedral. Mainly I was at Kogarah Fire Station and on completion of the course was appointed a member of the Women's Fire Auxiliary. Also did many camouflage nets."
