Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Edmund Watt, 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion from Willoughby, NSW. A 19 year old trade warehouseman prior to enlisting on 12 January 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 1863) with the 4th Reinforcements of the 1st Battalion from Sydney on 10 April 1915 aboard HMAT Argyllshire. After further training and promotions in Egypt, he was transferred to the Brigade Machine Gun Company. Following further training in England, he served in France where he was commissioned and awarded the French Croix de Guerre. Lt Watt was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 20 September 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
