Description

British Pattern 1892 Infantry Officer's sword and scabbard. The hilt has a nickel plated half basket 'gothic' style guard having a VR cartouche badge and a plain back strap with a wire bound fishskin grip. The straight blade has a single fuller to each side to within ten inches of the spear point. It is etched with a foliage design for half the length on both sides with a crown over the royal VR cypher. The ricasso has a brass disc stamped APPROVED on the right side within the interlocking triangle symbol and on the left is the Prince of wales feathers over BY APPOINTMENT and the makers name of HENRY WILKINSON PALL MALL LONDON. The back edge is stamped 29533.

This sword was owned by Major General Edward Longergan Sheehan who was appointed to various headquarters and training postings in Australia and abroad from 1920 to 1946.
