Informal portrait of NX32348 Private John Allan Macmillan, 22 Brigade Headquarters of Sydney, NSW, who was arrested in Borneo on 27 July 1943 at Sandakan. On 2 March 1944 he was sentenced to 18 Months in prison. He was gaoled by the Kempi Tai (Japanese Military Police) in Outram Road prison for giving news to non-interned Europeans and for bringing in radio parts and medical supplies to camp. He arrived at hideous Outram Road in Singapore on 11 March 1944. he was released and sent to Changi Prison Camp on 29 October 1944; in this time his weight dropped from its normal thirteen and a half stone to six stone eight pounds.
