Liberation of Belsen concentration camp
Description
Near Hanover, Germany. 20 April 1945. Two unidentified men (the one on the left is believed to belong to the decontamination squad) viewing the strafing damage on a field ambulance in Belsen concentration camp. A local truce that had been declared on 13 April 1945 near Celle, so that the British could liberate Belsen had expired late at night on 19 April 1945. At 7.15am the next day four Focke-Wulfes bombed the water system and strafed the field ambulance. Three medical orderlies died during the raid. Imperial War Museum photograph BU4090. (Donor R. Wells)
