The grave of 2002 Private (Pte) Eugene Victor Jules Paillard 1st Battalion; 724 Trooper (Tpr) John Hugh McRea, 1st Australian Light Horse; 1545 Pte John Hughes, 3rd Battalion. Pte Paillard was a blacksmith from Toronto, NSW prior to enlistment and embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Ceramic on 25 June 1915. On 9 August 1915 he was wounded in action at Gallipoli and, after being transferred to the Military Hospital, Valetta, Malta, died from septicaemia on 14 August 1915, aged 20. Tpr McRae, a grocer from Barellan, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Anglo Egyptian on 8 February 1915. On 7 August 1915, he was wounded in action at Gallipoli and, after transferring to the Military Hospital, Valetta, Malta, died on 15 August 1915 aged 22. Pte Hughes, a miner from Surrey Hills, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with H Company from Sydney on HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914. After being wounded in action at Gallipoli, he was evacuated to Cairo and on 14 August 1915, whilst being transferred to Malta, he died on board H S Dunluce Castle on 14 August 1915, aged 40. All three men were buried in the Addolorata Cemetery Malta.
