Members of 11 Squadron RAF, celebrating the return of 407284 Flying Officer (FO) Geoffrey Shuttleworth (Geoff) Burgan RAAF, who was shot down by the Germans in Libya in November 1941. He later managed to escape a Prisoner of War (POW) camp, and return to his squadron for which initiative he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Identified, left to right are: O4970 Squadron Leader Reginald Max Rechner DFC; FO Burgan (on the shoulders of two other men); possibly 406203 FO David Hugh Evans (obscured); Mick Woodham (with beard); unidentified; possibly 402187 Sergeant (Sgt) Noel Gibson Sterling Drummond: unidentified; unidentified. FO Burgan and FO Evans were both lost in the Indian theatre of operations on 9 April 1942, while Sgt Drummond was lost near Derna, Libya on 12 December 1941.
