Portrait of 6766 Private (Pte) Lawrence (Snowy) Atherton, B Section, 8th Field Ambulance, of Sydney, NSW. Pte Atherton enlisted on 18 July 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal on 24 September 1917 for displaying "great courage and devotion to duty and disregard of personal danger" while carrying wounded from Hooge Tunnel to Birk Crossroads. He also went to the assistance of a wounded soldier and "in spite of heavy shelling he brought him back to the Dressing Station and subsequently carried him to the next Post". Pte Atherton returned to Australia on 25 February 1919. (Donor L. Hawkes)
