Lieutenant George Pinnock Merz climbing aboard a Bristol Boxkite aircraft. Lt Merz later of Australian Flying Corps, attached to 30 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, was the first Australian pilot to be killed in action when his plane was forced down and was attacked by Arabs, in Mesopotamia, on 30 July 1915, aged 23 years.
