The 6th Reinforcements of the 35th Battalion at Lark Hill camp. 2835 Sergeant (Sgt) Colin Turner Mills is in the centre of the photograph which also contains 2770 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Sidney Thomas Brooks. Sgt Mills, a bank clerk from Bondi, New South Wales enlisted on 9 June 1916 and L Cpl Brooks, a clerk from Bondi, New South Wales, enlisted on 7 August 1916 and both embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana on 25 November 1916 for Devonport, England. Sgt Mills joined his battalion on the Western Front, France, on 13 May 1917. He was wounded in action on 11 June 1917 and was evacuated to England on 4 August 1917 for treatment and rehabilitation and then returned to Australia for discharge, medically unfit, on 8 August 1918. L Cpl Brooks, after initial training in England, remained on staff of the 9th Training Battalion rising to the rank of Acting Sergeant. On 31 March 1918 he reverted to the ranks as he proceeded to Southampton en route to joining his battalion on the Western Front, France. He was taken on strength of the 35th Battalion on 21 April 1918 and was appointed L Cpl on 23 April 1918. L Cpl Brooks was transferred to the 33rd Battalion on 27 April 1918 and was killed in action on 25 June 1918 near Villers Bretonneux, France. He was aged 23 years.
