Description
Portrait of Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) James (Jim) P. Gwilliam RAAF, air gunner, of Bathust, NSW, and Flt Sgt Eric L. Johnston RAAF, both of No. 78 (Halifax) Squadron. Flt Sgt Gwilliam and Flt Sgt Johnston were shot down on 22 June 1944 en route to a bombing mission in Laon in northern France. They were separated, and each was helped by members of the French Resistance and were reunited before being turned over to the Gestapo and transported to Fresnes Prison, Paris. They were later transported to Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Germany, along with two other members of the same crew, where they spent approximately six weeks before being transferred to a Prisoner of War (POW) camp with other allied airmen.
