Description

Grave of a British serviceman and two Australians at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. The Australians are 1913 Private (Pte) Thomas Walter Briggs 2nd Battalion and 1389 Corporal (Cpl) Frederick Hanson Merry, 1st Battalion. Pte Briggs, native of Surrey, England, enlisted from Newtown, New South Wales on 13 January 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Hororata on 13 April 1915 arriving at Gallipoli on 17 June 1915. Pte Briggs was wounded in action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli on 8 August 1915 and died of these wounds in Malta on 12 August 1915. He was aged 22 years. Cpl Merry, native of Dublin, Ireland, enlisted at Liverpool, New South Wales, on 2 November 1914 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Seang Bee on 11 February 1915 arriving at Gallipoli on 7 May 1915. He was wounded in action the first time on 25 May 1915 and was treated aboard HS Newmarket before rejoining his battalion on 8 July 1915. Pte Merry was wounded in action on 7 August 1915 at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, and died of these wounds in Baviere Hospital, Malta, on 14 August 1915. He was aged 23 years.
