Description
After leaving the Hall of the Thousand Mats on sacred Miyajima Island, unidentified Australian soldiers come down the steps with the Pagoda on their left. Although manifestly untrue, it is traditional that Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the hall in the 16th Century from the wood of a single camphor tree. Floor space in Japan is measured by the number of "mats", each 6' x 3'. The floor area of this hall, therefore is 18,000 square feet.
