4 Pioneer Battalion sweetheart brooch : Mrs Charlotte Careless
15 carat gold sweetheart brooch with a fine safety chain. The brooch is a wreath with crossed axes in the central void and a red enamel crown at the top. Above the axes is a white enamelled scroll with the letters 'A.I.F.' below which is a circular white and purple enamel colour patch of 4 Pioneer Battalion. Another scroll at the bottom reads '4TH PIONEERS'. The reverse has a rose gold pin and is stamped with a maker's name, which may be 'F.R.& S.' and the carat.
This sweetheart brooch was brought home for Mrs Charlotte Careless by her son, 2844 Private Arthur Charles Careless. He enlisted on 25 May 1916 at the age of 19 and was attached to 4 Pioneer Battalion from September that year. He trained on the Salisbury Plains in England from January 1917 and proceeded to France in September. He returned to England in April 1919 and embarked for return to Australia on 15 June 1919.
