Kiriwina, Trobriand Islands, Papua. October 1943. Five No. 79 Squadron RAAF Mk Vc Spitfire aircraft and three US Army Air Force Douglas C47 transport aircraft on Kiriwina airfield. Spitfires identified include: A58-168, UP-B (RAF No. ES259), second from left (flown by 421881 Pilot Officer W. R. (Frank) Binning); A58-213, UP-X (RAF No. LZ844), third from left (flown by 403681 Sergeant I. E. B. (Ian) McKellar); A58-104, UP-A (RAF No. EE564), far right (flown by 403434 Flying Officer J. R. (Jim) Richards with support crew of 41042 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) T. P. (Tom) Neill, Flight Rigger, 72120 LAC A. N. (Arthur) Gately, Armourer). Note battery carts plugged into two nearest Spitfire aircraft for engine starting.
