Description

Eden, NSW. c April 1942. The mangled tail piece of a United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P40 Kittyhawk aircraft at the crash site on the slopes of Mount Imlay. The Kittyhawk belonged to 8th Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, USAAF, which was operating from Canberra, the aircraft was completing a routine training exercise over the Snowy Mountains when it flew off course and crashed. Another Kittyhawk from the same Squadron crashed at Wonboyn on the same day. Both pilots, 2nd Lieutenant John Musial and Neal Takala were both killed. (Donor W. Fancourt)
