Studio portrait of 1768 Corporal (later Sergeant) Edward Phillip Riley, 29th Battalion. A sleeper hewer from Irrewillipe, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Riley embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Demosthenes on 29 October 1915. Subsequently transferring to the 14th Battalion, he was wounded in action and promoted to Sergeant. Later diagnosed as seriously ill, he was to be returned to Australia but died in South Africa from tubercular meningitis, aged 22, and was buried in the Capetown (Plumstead) Cemetery.
