Studio portrait of 3375 Private (Pte) Frederick Samuel Spencer, 52nd Battalion from Gympie, Queensland. A 19 year old dairyman prior to enlisting on 1 May 1917, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements of the 41st Battalion from Sydney on 14 June 1917 aboard HMAT Hororata. Following further training in England, he joined the 52nd Battalion in France on 9 March 1918 and was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918. Pte Spence is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave.
