Description

Gizeh, Egypt. 14 March 1986. Two UH-1H Iroquois helicopters, one RAAF and one Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), flying past the pyramids. Wing Commander Nick W. Hobson obtained permission from Egyptian authorities for three helicopters of the Rotary Wing Aviation Unit to overfly the pyramids over a period of five hours in order to mark the RAAF's involvement in the Middle East. Two were to complete several runs over the pyramids while the third (RAAF488) recorded the event on film. The all Australian crew of the RAAF Iroquois (tail number 085) were Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) Ian D. Fogarty (Captain), Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Rob G. McGee (Co-pilot), and Warrant Officer (WO) T. L. Hamill (crewman). The all New Zealand crew of the RNZAF Iroquois (tail number 809) were Sqn Ldr Graham B. Lintott (Captain), Flying Officer (FO) P. G. Cheal (Co-pilot), and K. J. Smith (crewman).
