Description

An Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) soldier holding a 105mm artillery shell and cable that had been used by Viet Cong (VC) guerillas as a road mine. During a cordon and search operation, a Provincial Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) captured two Viet Cong who tried to escape. The PRU then conducted a search of the immediate area in which they had been hiding, discovering the beginning of a cable and a battery, indicating that a command detonated mine had been laid. The cable was followed for 150 metres to the artillery shell which had been buried in the middle of a dirt road. The PRU, led by Warrant Officer Class 1 E. B. Ostara, Australian Army Training Team (AATTV), conducted this cordon and search operation after receiving intelligence that VC guerillas were operating from a hamlet in the Phu Cat area, and demanding food from the villagers.
